VC Message: Leadership Transition for Health Sciences Space Advisory Committee
I write to inform you that after more than 25 years of dedicated service as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Integrative Research at UC San Diego Health Sciences, Distinguished Professor of Medicine Jerrold Olefsky, MD, has decided to step down from his administrative role, effective June 30, 2024. This decision allows him to focus more fully on his clinical and academic pursuits, where he has made significant contributions throughout his career.
Dr. Olefsky has been an integral part of our Health Sciences Space Advisory Committee, particularly noted for his leadership in advancing research facilities and ensuring that our buildings not only meet scientific standards but also exemplify architectural excellence. As a renowned research scientist, his instinct for balancing form and function has helped guide transformational building projects that serve as exemplars for our community. One notable project, the newly named Israni Biomedical Research Facility (formerly Biomedical Research Facility II) received the 2014 Grand Orchid award from the San Diego Architectural Foundation, an honor bestowed on “parts of the built environment” in San Diego that make the city a better place to live. Jurors touted the building as “a sustainable jewel box; rational, subtle, competent, pure…” and commented: “Not only is it a living building, but from a user standpoint, it’s changing humanity.”
We deeply appreciate Dr. Olefsky's commitment to excellence and his tireless efforts in promoting integrative research across disciplines. His legacy of visionary leadership will continue to inspire us as we advance our academic and research excellence.
During this transition, I am pleased to announce that Professor Christopher Glass, MD, PhD, a renowned researcher who has made significant contributions to the Health Sciences scientific enterprise, has graciously agreed to serve as Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Integrative Research. Dr. Glass will ensure continuity in our research initiatives and provide strong leadership in this crucial role.
Please join me in expressing our gratitude to Dr. Olefsky for his outstanding service and in offering our full support to Dr. Glass as he assumes his interim responsibilities.
Sincerely,
John M. Carethers, MD
Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences
